Any linguists?

Just wondering if there are any other language students in the club? I studied French and Swedish a loooong (!!) time ago and am currently trying to pick up some Italian. Are there any people who would be interested in occasional drinks out and an opportunity to brush up on other language skills? I'd especially love to meet some other French speakers in the Derby area, but I do enjoy learning about all languages.

I'd be interested! I am a bit of a language junkie, particularly the dead kind. I am also trying to relearn the French I learned at school as well, and am hoping to learn Latin soon as it's such a major dead language, and I don't know it at all! :)

I'd also be interested. I've studied French, Spanish and Italian in the past but I'm totally out of practice and have forgotten most of what I knew!

I'm a linguist having studied French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian at school, uni and afterwards and have lived in France so I'd definitely be interested in something to do with languages. For the last few years I have done night classes at Birmingham Uni but since moving to Derby, I've not managed to find anything... Perhaps we could set up a course?

Hello Ladies,

I think the local colleges offer language courses but if you are just looking to practise your skills then I can organise a night where you can all meet up and practise speaking in a particular language.

For example another member on this thread http://www.ladiesnightoutclub.co.uk/forum/general-discussion/anyone-speak-spanish has suggested that we could visit the Spanish tapas restaurant El Toro on London Road in Derby and practise speaking in Spanish. The owners are from Spain and have been in Derby for years.

Or I can arrange an event where you meet in a cafe for tea/coffee and you practise your language skills with each other.

Let me know what you think.

Hi Tara
I think that would be a brilliant idea and would love to go to El Torro with other ladies - my spanish is rusty but I would feel confident if other members were giving it a try whilst we ordered our meal - sounds like a fun evening.

Hi - my Swedish is OK as I lived in Stockholm for 5 years (would love to practise it more so I don't go rusty!) I used to be OK with French, and can still read and understand it, but whenever I try to speak it Swedish words come out instead! Great that you can converse a little in Swedish, Alison - I'll look out for you at future events. Mind you, difficult to chat online in Swedish on an English keyboard - half the vowels are missing! So there were a few of us interested in this, but I don't know if anyone spoke a word of Spanish the evening we met up for Tapas!!

I wonder if there is any interest in a regular foreign film night instead? DVD at home with a drink and nibbles. We can even watch with the subtitles switched on!

(I'm happy to host at mine near Burton, but do travel too!)
