About this Event

This event has been going for several years and is a fantastic way to visit some beautiful private gardens combined with the opportunity to see local artists and their work.

For the 2010 Melbourne Festival Art and Architecture there are more than 40 private houses, public halls and churches hosting visiting artists.

Art and Architecture Trail

The Art and Architecture Trail will be open to the public from 10am until 6pm on Saturday 18th and 10am until 5pm on Sunday 19th of September, and consists of easy-walking loops around the central streets of Melbourne.

In the main, visiting professional artists are being hosted in rooms made available in private houses, which are not usually open to the public. Most of the houses are of historic significance, architectural information is contained in the Trail Guide, as is the name and speciality of the artists and their contact details. This year The Dower House, Castle House, The Hollow, The Old School House and many others houses are hosting artists, none of these homes are normally open to the public. The artists work, which ranges from paintings and photography, to sculpture, textiles, ceramics, jewellery and corsets, is all for sale.

Cost

The Trail can be started at any point, but you will need a Trail Badge and a Trail Guide to enter the buildings.

  • These can be purchased for £4.50.
  • The Trail Guide consists of a map of Melbourne with Festival sites marked.
  • The Trail Badge is a pass to get into all the houses and halls free of charge.

Food

As in previous years, food will be in various locations around the Trail including Castle House, Bill Shone Leisure Centre, Melbourne Senior Citizen Centre and numerous restaurants and pubs in the centre of the village, local charities will also be providing refreshments.

Car parking

There is limited parking within the area of the Trail so it would be best to park on the approach roads such as Ashby Road, Derby Road, Packhorse Road and Station Road or on Castle Lane Industrial Estate beside Melbourne Fire Station in Castle Street.

Fortunately the weather although a bit of sunshine would have been nice. The art, as in previous years, is quite diverse and so are the prizes! With shopping bags at £100, Paintings at £600 it is sometimes better to just look and admire. However there are some artists who have work available to buy at £30 to £40 who are clearly doing it for the love of art and not a regular income. I was very tempted by a lovely metal tree at £85 but resisted. Managed to spend all of 80p on two cooking books at Treetops Hospice charity shop - the shop is always open on a Sunday - location the Melbourne Hall Estate workshops. Also had lunch in the tea rooms at Melbourne Hall - very tasty.
If you fancy going along next year the art trail is usually the 3rd weekend in September. For anyone who normally goes to Wirksworth - Melbourne has no hills!
